Before the introduction of the G8 curriculum, Year 11 was the ideal time for a year abroad. Today, this year is firmly integrated into the Abitur programme. However, many British boarding schools have adapted to this shift and can now accommodate students in almost every year group. The opportunities available often depend on the specific requirements of individual German schools:
- A year in Year 9.
- A year or half a year in Year 10.
- A year after Year 10, followed by re-entry into Year 11, with the Abitur being completed a year later.
In many cases, headteachers offer provisional promotion to the next academic year. Given the high academic standards of British boarding schools, most students meet the necessary requirements. Even if students opt for the third option, one thing is clear: A year abroad is never a wasted year!
