This year, a German student was again part of the winning team at England’s national school championships. Daniel made it into Repton’s first team as the only German player. This is an exceptional achievement, as the squad for the first and second teams consists of almost 40 players, all competing at national and even international levels. The coach, Martin Jones, also works with the U18 England national team.
Testimonial
"I, like many other Germans, decided to spend a year abroad at an English boarding school. For me, it was essential to continue playing hockey at a high level, which was one of my main reasons for choosing England over America.
Second place at the Midland Finals secured our qualification for the Indoor National Finals, held this year in Whitgift. The venue was packed, especially since the U16 National Finals were running parallel. The atmosphere remained just as lively on the second day, exclusively dedicated to the U18 matches.
After finishing the group stage in first place, we faced Trent College in the semi-finals—a team that had beaten us at the Midland Finals. The pre-game atmosphere was special, as both players and parents were already familiar with each other. However, it couldn’t compare to the intensity during the match. The fairness from players and parents alike was remarkable—no jeers, just encouragement like 'unlucky' or 'heads up boys!'
In a gripping and high-quality match, we defeated Trent 2:1. We then won the final 4:0, a scoreline that doesn’t quite reflect the intense and thrilling nature of the game.
What impressed me the most throughout the weekend was the fairness and atmosphere. Already, this year abroad has been worth it! I will cherish the memories of this perfectly organized weekend for a long time to come."
Admission
To secure a spot at Repton School, students with good grades should apply about a year before their planned enrollment. The admission process includes interviews, entrance tests, and, for hockey players, a trial training session.
The Stanford & Ackel agency has successfully guided many hockey players to schools in England, including supporting Daniel with his application. Philipp Ackel explains: "We have a special relationship with Repton, as my sister Susanne spent two years there to complete her Abitur. Nevertheless, students need to meet the required criteria and be well-prepared. Daniel's success makes us very proud, and we also congratulate our other players in different school teams. Incidentally, two other German girls became English runners-up with Trent College."
Stanford & Ackel provides free support to families and can even assist in securing scholarships.
