All you need to know about the International Baccalaureate Diploma

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme ((IBDP) is a two-year academic course primarily aimed at students between the ages of 16-18. It is an international programme that is offered in approximately 5700 educational institutions in 160 countries. This number continues to grow each year as the benefits of studying the IBDP are becoming increasingly recognised, especially by the top Universities.

The IB positions itself as offering an alternative to national curriculums through two core principles. The first is to develop international awareness through the teaching and learning in all subjects. The IB encourages the development of responsible global citizens who are active in local communities in addition to achieving a better social and cultural understanding of the global community. The second principle is in developing specific skills within the IB learner profile. The aim is to create learners who amongst other attributes are;

Inquirers; Critical-thinkers, Knowledgeable, Good Communicators,
Open-minded Risk-takers, Team players, Balanced, Reflective

To achieve these skills the programme focuses on critical analysis, student choice and a holistic education. In addition, pupils study the Theory of Knowledge (TOK), this is an opportunity to reflect on the nature of knowledge and in how we know what we claim to know.

The learning and personal skills developed throughout studying the IBDP ensures it is regarded as providing a very high standard of post-16 education. Graduates of the Diploma are highly desirable by top Universities throughout Europe, the United States and the Rest of the World.

There are 103 IBDP providers in the UK but not all offer boarding. The UK is an excellent destination to study the Diploma, the results speak for themselves. In 2024 the global pass rate was 80%, in the UK it was 94.6%. The maximum score in the Diploma is 45 points. Worldwide more than 90,000 pupils sat the Diploma in 2024 with those studying in the UK beating the global average by 4 points.
