Stonyhurst College is a coeducational, Roman Catholic independent school, adhering to the Jesuit tradition. Excellent facilities and beautiful historic buildings, along with impressive co-curricular opportunities encourage each pupil in this vibrant, happy and diverse community, whether Catholic or not, to achieve their best and play a full part in school life. The College provides boarding and day education to approximately 475 boys and girls aged 13–18. It has one main church, St Peter's, and five chapels. The College also has four main libraries.

Stonyhurst College, founded in 1593, is the oldest Jesuit school in the world.
The Lord of the Rings
J. R. R. Tolkien wrote part of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ in a classroom on the Upper Gallery during his stay at the college where his son taught Classics and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of “Sherlock Holmes” was a former pupil.
Academic
Good academic results, especially IB.
Stonyhurst offers both A Levels and the IB Diploma, and teaching is highly personal and tailored, aiming to educate the whole person. The unique Stonyhurst Collections provide wonderful focal points for teaching whilst small tutor groups, learner profiles and individual attention ensure pupils achieve excellent academic results - around 70% achieve A*-B at A level. Personal tutors help pupils settle in, encouraging and challenging in equal measure, and are on hand for the big decisions.
International Baccalaureate
Stonyhurst 2021 IB highlights:
- 100% Diploma Programme pass rate compared to a world average of 85% (IBO, 2020)
- One student achieved 45 points (out of a maximum of 45 points) placing them in the top 0.5% of candidates worldwide.
- 71% of pupils achieved 36 or more points equivalent to 3As at A level
- A third of pupils achieved more than 40 points, placing them in the top 4% of candidates worldwide
- An average point score of 37.8, compared with the typical worldwide average of 31.3 (IBO, 2020)
- 100% pass rate for Stonyhurst's IB Career Related Programme pupils
- Pupils win places at top universities across the world
Sports, Music & Drama
Sport is an essential part of life at Stonyhurst. Extensive playing fields are complemented by a golf course, tennis bubble; sports halls, dance academy and shooting range, whilst the range of sports includes fencing, water polo and cross-country running. As County cup winners for 6 consecutive years Stonyhurst has a national reputation for rugby, and has produced sixteen international rugby players. Hockey, netball, swimming, badminton, basketball and tennis also have strong reputations.
Music and Drama play a prominent role in school life and students tour regularly to Europe and the Far East.
