Everything about school uniforms at British boarding schools: Requirements, ordering, costs & tips for parents.

School uniforms are a daily reality at British boarding schools, and they often raise questions for families new to the system. What needs to be purchased? Where should you order from? And how strict are the rules? Here’s a clear overview of what you need to know.

Uniforms: uniform but not all the same

Each school has its own approach to uniforms. Families receive detailed guidelines in a Joining Pack or Starter Pack, usually sent before the summer holidays. This pack specifies required clothing, including measurements and how and where to order.

Uniform requirements up to GCSE (Year 11)

Until the end of Year 11 (GCSE level), students wear a mandatory school uniform. While colours and styles vary by school, the look is classically British: suits, blazers, shirts or blouses, and ties, depending on the school’s tradition.

Sixth Form: Business attire replaces uniforms

In the Sixth Form (Years 12–13), the traditional uniform is often replaced by a business dress code. Boys typically wear suits with shirts and school ties, while girls opt for tailored suits with skirts or trousers. Schools provide clear guidelines on colours and styles. Clothing must not display any obvious logos, the colour of shirts and blouses is often specified and jumpers are generally plain.

Sportswear is uniform too

All students, regardless of year group, wear a standardised sports kit, which is ordered through the School Shop or Pre-Loved Uniform Shop. Students can bring their own sports equipment, such as hockey sticks or tennis rackets, golf clubs, etc.

Ordering and Fit

Most schools offer uniforms through online shops, with items delivered directly to the school. Our advice: Order only the essentials in advance and have them sent to the school. Any additional items can be ordered as needed and will be delivered within a few days. Use the provided size charts to ensure a proper fit.

Don’t forget about shoes

Leather shoes (not trainers) are required with the uniform, while sports shoes are needed for PE and games. These are usually not available through the school shop, so plan to purchase them separately, ensuring they meet the school’s guidelines.

How much does a school uniform cost?

Parents should expect to pay roughly between €500 and €1,200 for a school uniform.

Second-hand savings

Many schools have well-stocked Pre-Loved Shops, offering a sustainable and cost-effective way to buy blazers, jackets, and sportswear.

Label Everything!

All clothing and personal items must be clearly labelled with the student’s full name, sometimes including their boarding house or house ID number. Labels can be sewn, ironed, or stuck on. For underwear and socks, use labelled mesh bags (we recommend having two).

Towels and Bedding

Students typically bring their own towels and bedding. For short stays (e.g., one term), bedding may sometimes be available to borrow.

Wash your own laundry?

In some schools students can do their own laundry, with support from matrons, house staff who play a key role in boarding life, overseeing order, laundry, minor ailments, and student well-being.

Personal Clothing and Special Occasions

Don’t forget to pack:

  • Casual wear
  • Formal attire for school balls or parties
  • Smart outfits for house dinners, concerts, theatre, etc.

Final Thoughts

School uniforms are a cornerstone of British school life, promoting unity, belonging, and structure.

With careful preparation and guidance, organising the initial uniform setup can be straightforward.
