Sport will play a major part at this information evening on school stays in Britain for pupils aged 12 to 18. Sport matters a great deal at British boarding schools, and we are happy to advise you on how best to combine it with a stay abroad. On the evening, we will cover hockey, tennis, rugby and lacrosse.
You don't need to be a keen athlete to spend time at school in England or Scotland, though. British schools place great value on a broad education and support pupils well beyond the classroom: art, drama, music and sport all have a firm place in school life. We help you find the school that suits your child's academic goals and needs as well as their interests.
How can school and sport be combined in England?
In Germany, sport usually takes place in clubs after school and often involves long journeys. At British boarding schools, sport is a fixed part of the timetable. Training, matches and lessons all take place on the school grounds, supervised by the school's own coaching staff. Many schools compete in national schools’ competitions, and sports scholarships are available for particularly talented children. At the same time, academic standards remain high. In Britain, pupils do not have to choose between sport and school.
Which schools will be presenting?
Repton School, Derbyshire
Repton School is a boarding school with a long history, just south of Derby in the Midlands. Founded in 1557, it takes pupils aged 13 to 18. Sport has an exceptional standing at Repton: with 53 national titles since 2005, it is regarded as the most successful hockey school in England. The tennis programme is led by a former world-ranked player, and Olympic champion Adam Peaty trained in the school's own swimming pool. Repton is just as strong in the sciences. The Science Priory has a university-style lecture theatre, modern laboratories and its own observatory. Pupils who want to perform will find professional conditions in the 400 Hall Theatre, modelled on London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA); in 2025, thirteen Reptonians were accepted into the National Youth Theatre. Many leavers go on to study at leading British universities, and a growing number in the USA.
Oakham School, Rutland
Oakham School is a boarding school in the small market town of Oakham, near the Rutland Water reservoir in the East Midlands. Founded in 1584, it teaches pupils aged 11 to 18, with around 810 in the Senior School (Year 9 to 13). More than 30 sports are on offer, from sailing to golf. Oakham is particularly successful at rugby: the 1st XV has won the national schools cup three times. In hockey, both the girls' and the boys' teams compete near the top at the national schools’ championships. Academically, Oakham is one of the most experienced IB schools in Britain: since 2002, Sixth Form pupils have been able to choose between the IB Diploma and A-Levels. The creative programme is just as broad. There are five major theatre productions every year, around half of all pupils play or sing in an ensemble, and the Jerwood School of Design provides space for product design and technology.
